New Referees

If you have any questions about being a Metro League referee, e-mail Zaida at metroleaguereferee@gmail.com.

How do I become a Metro League referee?

Anyone who has completed a NLSA sanctioned referee course can become a metro league official. There are two courses:

  1. The Small-Sided or "Youth" Referee course

    • This is a one day course for referees aged 12+

    • This course allows the official to referee "small-sided" soccer such as 6v6 or 8v8. This means that they can referee in the Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 metro league divisions.

    • This course does not qualify an official to referee 11-aside soccer (Under 15, Under 17) or to be an assistant referee.

  2. The Entry Level or "District" Referee course

    • This is a three day course with an exam at the end

    • This course allows an official to referee in U8 - U17 metro league.

    • This course trains officials to be assistant referees.

    • Participants must be 14 or older at the time the course is taken. Participants may be small-sided referees who are upgrading, or they may be new to officiating.

Once you are a registered referee with the NLSA, please e-mail Zaida at metroleaguereferee@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list.

What do I wear or bring to games?

The orange Metro Soccer League referee tee shirt is free to all referees! You can pick one up at the King George V Office on Carnell drive during their operating hours (please visit www.sjsoccer.ca)

For the rest of your uniform, please wear black shorts, black socks and your soccer cleats (it doesn't matter what colour). You will need a stopwatch, a coin, a whistle, a notepad and a pencil.

Dress for the weather! Pants are ok to wear if it is cold out. Please wear your referee uniform over jackets/sweaters.

The field marshall will bring the balls to the game. They will also provide you access to any referee change rooms or equipment rooms. You can return the balls to them when the game is over. Game sheets are not required for U7-U11 age groups. If you are refereering U13 the field marshall will provide you with a game sheet that you will return back to them following the game.
